Pain au Chocolat

The American in me thinks
The chocolate part is so meager
As to be an afterthought
Too gross a misnomer to have been
Simply lost in translation

But I also consider perhaps that’s the point
We taste each other’s cores
Through flaky layers folded by hands
We’ll never hold
Partners and parents and past lives
